More then a month since anything was posted by Mtld. What's going on? Is .Mobi still on track? Are mountains being moved? James Pearce said at the beginning of the year that 2008 would be a momentous one for .Mobi. OK Right...Is it happening?
And how will Icanns soon to be decided new proposal effect .Mobi?
This is all over the news:
The race is on: Get your own Internet domain
Officials at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), during the currently on going meetings in Paris, have said that they were poised to bring the most dramatic change to the Internet in four decades by opening up top-level domains to endless variations.
This decision would potentially allow companies to turn their own brands into domains (think .CNN, .MAC, or .LIVE) or to create broad product groups such as .CAR, .SPORTS or .BANK. Ebay is already a contender to use its name, according to Paul Levins, executive officer of ICANN. "We're talking about introducing potentially thousands more names," said Levins.

"The application fee for a domain name under the proposed system has not been set, but candidates estimate that it could range from €25,000 to €250,000, or about $39,000 to $390,000. Icann is also prepared to set up an auction system if competing groups bid for the same name. Private companies would reap their profit by selling the domain names to registrars, which would then sell them to individual customers."

Thank you, Fred, as always for your comments.

dotMobi has been on the road for the past month, as noted in the heading on this section. The last event of the series ended today. In the interim, we've also been at the Mobile Marketing Association's quarterly forum in NYC as well as at ICANN Paris.

You can see a participant write up of our London mobiThinking event on 26 June 2008 at http://www.andrewgrill.com/blog/index.php/2008/06/mobi-brands-are-slowly-warming-to-the-idea-of-mobile and see photos at http://picasaweb.google.com/pinkybrand/LondonMobiThinkingEvent.

We'll soon do a full write up of all the events as well as commentary on the most recent ICANN meeting and the outcomes from that event.

You'll also see that we released the results of a study that we conducted on mobile web usage and attitudes; check http://mtld.mobi/node/1051 for details. And in that release, you'll also note that dotMobi has now registered more than 1,000,000 .mobi domains. We'll also be discussing that in the near future.

Thanks for your reply Vance. I am looking forward to the write up you mention is coming soon. Also thanks for the links you posted.
Regards
Fred
